Rosmarinus lavandulaceus

Rosmarinus lavandulaceus, also known as trailing or prostrate rosemary, is a low-growing, spreading variety with aromatic green foliage and masses of mauve-blue flowers in spring and summer. Ideal for cascading over walls, covering banks, or filling garden edges, it combines beauty with culinary usefulness. Hardy and drought-tolerant once established, it thrives in New Zealand’s sunny, well-drained sites, adding colour, fragrance, and ground-hugging greenery to both ornamental and edible landscapes.

How to grow Rosmarinus lavandulaceus in NZ

Plant in a sunny position with free-draining soil for best flowering and foliage health. It tolerates poor soils and coastal conditions well. Water regularly during establishment, then only in prolonged dry spells. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Avoid heavy feeding, which can reduce flavour and flower production.

Rosmarinus lavandulaceus care tips

Allow space for the plant to spread naturally. Avoid overwatering and ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Harvest sprigs as needed for cooking, which also helps keep plants tidy. This variety is frost-tolerant in most NZ climates and ideal for low-maintenance landscaping.

Rosmarinus lavandulaceus size, spacing, and growth rate

This variety grows 30–50 cm tall and can spread 1.5–2 m wide, creating a dense mat of foliage. Space plants 1–1.2 m apart for continuous groundcover. Growth is moderate to fast in warm, sunny sites.
