Pratia pedunculata, commonly known as Trailing Pratia, is a low-growing, hardy ground cover plant. The small leaves on this plant give the appearance of a lush, green carpet. Masses of small, light blue, star-shaped flowers cover the plant from spring through autumn as it grows to 10 cm tall and 70 cm wide. Pratia pedunculata is commonly used as a ground cover, an alternative to a grass lawn, or planted between paving stones and the like. It will trail over a wall or the sides of a pot.

How to grow Pratia pedunculata in NZ

Pratia pedunculata, also known as blue star creeper, grows well in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. This hardy groundcover is ideal for lawns, between pavers, borders, and shaded areas in New Zealand gardens. It prefers consistent moisture but dislikes waterlogged soil. Plant in a sheltered spot with moderate foot traffic if you plan to use it as a lawn substitute. Water regularly during dry spells and mulch lightly to retain moisture. Trim as needed to control spread and encourage compact growth. It's a fast-growing, low-maintenance plant that produces dainty blue flowers in spring and summer.

Can Pratia pedunculata be grown as a lawn?

Yes, Pratia pedunculata can be grown as a substitute for lawns in low-traffic areas. It forms a dense, soft mat with small blue flowers and requires no maintenance, such as mowing. Ideal for courtyards, shaded spots, or between pavers, it thrives in moist, well-drained soil and handles light foot traffic. Regular watering is necessary during dry periods to keep the plant lush and healthy.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Pratia pedunculata typically grows to 2-5 cm tall and spreads up to 1 metre wide, forming a dense, ground-hugging mat. It has a fast growth rate, especially in moist, well-drained soil. For lawn alternatives or groundcover use, space plants 20-30 cm apart to achieve quick and even coverage. This spacing allows the plants to spread naturally while ensuring full ground coverage within one season.
