Pratia macrodon

Pratia macrodon is a NZ native that is commonly grown as a hardy ground cover. The small leaves on this plant give the appearance of a lush, green carpet. During spring through autumn, masses of small, white, star-shaped flowers cover the plant as it grows to 10 cm tall and 70 cm wide. Pratia macrodon is commonly used as a ground cover, an alternative to a grass lawn, included in white and cottage gardens, or planted between paving stones and the like. It also looks fantastic when grown in a hanging basket and allowed to trail over the sides.

How to grow Pratia macrodon in NZ

Pratia macrodon grows best in moist, well-draining soil and adapts to both full sun and partial shade. In New Zealand, it is ideal for rockeries, between pavers, or as a soft edging plant. Water regularly during dry periods to keep the soil slightly moist, especially while establishing. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage dense growth and abundant flowering. Light trimming after flowering will help maintain a tidy appearance and control spread.

Pratia macrodon care tips

Plant Pratia macrodon in full sun or partial shade with moist, free-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently damp during dry weather to maintain lush growth. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy foliage and prolific blooms. Trim back lightly after flowering to control spread and keep a neat form. It tolerates light foot traffic, making it suitable between pavers, but avoid heavy wear to prevent damage to the delicate stems and flowers.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Pratia macrodon forms a low mat, typically 2 to 5 cm tall, and can spread 40 to 60 cm or more via creeping stems. For even coverage in garden beds, rockeries, or between pavers, space plants about 30 to 40 cm apart. It has a fast growth rate in moist, well-draining soil and will quickly fill gaps, making it an excellent choice for a soft, flowering groundcover.
