Pratia 'Country Park'

Pratia 'Country Park' is a NZ native that is often grown as a hardy ground cover. The small leaves on this plant give the appearance of a lush, green carpet. It becomes adorned with masses of small, China-blue coloured flowers from spring through until autumn as it grows to 10 cm tall and 50 cm wide. Pratia 'Country Park' is commonly used as a ground cover, grown an alternative to a grass lawn, included in and cottage gardens, or planted between paving stones and the like. It also looks fantastic when grown in a hanging basket and allowed to trail over the sides.

How to grow Pratia 'Country Park' in NZ

Pratia ‘Country Park’ thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. In New Zealand, it is ideal as a groundcover, between pavers, or in rockeries where it can spread quickly to form a dense mat. Water regularly during dry periods to keep the soil slightly moist, especially while establishing. It benefits from occasional feeding in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser. Trim back lightly to control the spread and maintain a tidy appearance.

Pratia 'Country Park' care tips

Plant Pratia ‘Country Park’ in full sun or partial shade with moist, well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently damp, especially during dry spells, to maintain its lush growth. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and flowering. Trim or pinch back runners to control the spread and keep it looking neat. It tolerates light foot traffic, making it great between pavers, but avoid heavy wear to prevent plant damage.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Pratia ‘Country Park’ forms a low, dense mat growing only 2 to 5 cm tall, with a spread of up to 50 cm or more through creeping stems. For even coverage in garden beds, rockeries, or between pavers, space plants about 30 to 40 cm apart. It has a fast growth rate in moist, well-draining soil and can quickly fill gaps, making it an excellent choice for soft, green groundcover.
