How to grow Pratia angulata 'Blue Star' in NZ

Pratia angulata 'Blue Star', a hardy New Zealand native groundcover, grows best in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It spreads quickly to form a dense carpet of green foliage, dotted with starry blue flowers in spring and summer, followed by red berries. Plant in a sheltered site where the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly during dry periods, especially when establishing new plants. Mulch lightly to retain moisture and suppress weeds. It’s ideal for borders, underplanting, or spilling over walls and paths. Trim as needed to contain the spread and encourage denser growth.

Pratia angulata 'Blue Star' care tips

Pratia angulata 'Blue Star' is a low-maintenance, spreading groundcover that thrives in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Keep the soil consistently damp, especially during dry weather or when establishing new plants. Mulch lightly to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid covering any of the plant. Trim back runners if they spread beyond their intended area, and prune lightly after flowering to encourage compact growth. It tolerates light foot traffic and is ideal for softening edges, rockeries, or underplanting.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Pratia angulata 'Blue Star' typically grows to 5-10 cm tall and spreads up to 1 metre wide, forming a dense, ground-hugging mat. It has a fast growth rate, especially in moist, well-drained soil. For groundcover use, space plants 30-40 cm apart to achieve quick coverage. This spacing allows the plants to spread naturally while ensuring good airflow and effective weed suppression.
