Pimelea arenaria (Sand Daphne)

Sand Pimelea, Sand Daphne

Pimelea arenaria, commonly known as the sand Pimelea, is a prostrate, NZ native shrub that produces a thick mass of small, pale green leaves. Small, white flowers appear from spring to autumn and are followed by small, edible fruits. It typically grows to 40 cm tall and 1 m wide, performing best when grown in full sun on a well-drained soil. Pimelea arenaria is commonly used as a groundcover, added to coastal plantings, or planted on a bank where it can help with stabilising the soil.

How to grow Pimelea arenaria in NZ

Pimelea arenaria, also known as sand daphne, is a hardy New Zealand native that thrives in sandy, well-drained soils and full sun. Naturally found in coastal dunes, it’s well suited to dry, exposed sites and tolerates wind and salt-laden air. Plant in a sunny, open position with free-draining soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help it establish, then only during extended periods of dryness. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils. Light mulching helps retain moisture and reduce weed competition. No pruning is required; however, it can be lightly trimmed after flowering to maintain its form.

Pimelea arenaria Care Tips

Pimelea arenaria is low maintenance and ideal for coastal gardens. It prefers full sun and sandy, free draining soils. Avoid clay or waterlogged conditions. Water regularly during its first year, then only during long dry spells. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the stem. Pruning is generally unnecessary, but a light trim after flowering can tidy its shape. Apply a native plant fertiliser in spring if growth appears slow.

Plant Size and Spacing

Pimelea arenaria is a low-growing, spreading shrub that typically reaches 30–50 cm in height and spreads up to 1 metre in width. It has a moderate growth rate, forming a dense, ground-hugging habit over time. For mass planting or erosion control, space plants 50–70 cm apart to ensure complete coverage while allowing for airflow. This spacing also helps maintain healthy growth in coastal and sandy environments.
