Nertera depressa

Bead Plant

Nertera depressa, commonly known as the Bead Plant, is a NZ native plant that forms a mat of very small leaves and features colourful berries. Tiny flowers in spring are followed by bright orange-red berries in autumn which have an appearance akin to beads. It typically grows to 10 cm tall and 1 m wide. Nertera depressa is commonly used as a ground cover but will also perform well when grown in a container.

Growing Nertera depressa Successfully in NZ

Thrives in well-drained, moist soils in full sun to part shade. Plant in autumn or spring for best establishment. Performs well in shaded rockeries and as a container plant. Prefers cool, moist conditions.

Nertera depressa Care Tips

Water regularly to maintain moist soil but avoid waterlogging. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Remove old leaves and berries to encourage healthy growth. Protect from frost in colder areas.
