How to grow Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' in NZ

Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Choose a sunny, open site with good airflow to prevent fungal issues. It tolerates poor or sandy soils but dislikes heavy, wet conditions. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and requires little maintenance. Water young plants during dry spells to help them establish a strong root system. This low-growing conifer is ideal for rockeries, as a groundcover, and for coastal gardens due to its hardiness and compact form.

Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' care tips

Plant in full sun and free-draining soil, avoiding spots that hold water. Water regularly during establishment, then only in extended dry spells. Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth. Minimal pruning is required, but light trimming can be done to shape or control spread. This hardy, low-growing conifer tolerates frost, wind, and coastal conditions, making it excellent for ground cover, rockeries, and low-maintenance landscaping. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Growth rate, size, and spacing

Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' is a slow-growing, low-spreading conifer that typically reaches 20–30 cm in height and spreads 1–1.5 m wide over several years. Its compact, mounding habit makes it ideal as a groundcover or for edging. When planting, space the plants about 1–1.2 m apart to allow for natural spread and dense coverage. Its slow growth rate means minimal maintenance and long-lasting structure in the landscape.
