How to grow Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' in NZ

Growing Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' in NZ is easy in full sun and free draining soils. It thrives in slightly acidic conditions and performs well in coastal and exposed environments. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils as these can damage the roots. Water regularly during the first season to promote strong establishment, then reduce as it becomes drought tolerant. With minimal attention, Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' will spread vigorously and reward with year round colour and resilience.

Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' care tips

Caring for Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' is straightforward. Prune lightly after flowering to control its spread and encourage dense new growth. Use a low phosphorus fertiliser designed for Grevillea and Protea species to avoid root damage. Mulching around the base will help conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Being naturally hardy and disease resistant, Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' requires little extra effort to maintain, making it a reliable choice for NZ gardens.

Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' size, spacing, and growth rate

Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' is a fast growing groundcover that can spread up to 4–6 metres wide while remaining only about 30–50 cm tall. Its rapid growth makes it ideal for covering large areas quickly. When planting for coverage, space plants about 2–3 metres apart to allow them to spread and overlap naturally. Its dense habit suppresses weeds and stabilises soil, making Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' both practical and ornamental in landscaping projects.

Landscaping uses for Grevillea 'Royal Mantle'

Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' is highly valued for landscaping large areas, particularly banks, retaining walls, and difficult slopes where erosion control is needed. Its vibrant red flowers provide long lasting colour and attract native birds, enhancing biodiversity. It also works well cascading over walls or as a sprawling groundcover in big garden designs. Hardy and low maintenance, Grevillea 'Royal Mantle' is a practical and beautiful addition to NZ landscapes.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Grevillea 'Royal Mantle'? We are here to help.

Hi I have a very large bank that I'd like to have these cascading down (I've had them at a previous property on a rock wall and loved it!) if I plant them along the top of the bank, how far apart sideways, and down the bank do you suggest I plant them please? Thanks. Mel.

I'd aim for 1.5-2 m apart at the top of the bank and the same spacing across the bank. Use a diagonal planting pattern so you get more consistent filling of the gaps.
