How to grow Genista pilosa in NZ

Genista pilosa grows best in full sun where it will produce the heaviest flowering display. It prefers well drained soil and performs particularly well in sandy or gravelly conditions throughout New Zealand. Avoid heavy wet soils, especially during winter. Water regularly while establishing, then it becomes drought tolerant once roots are well developed. Choose an open sunny position for best growth.

Genista pilosa care tips

Genista pilosa is very low maintenance and easy to grow. Apply a light mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the stem base. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage dense growth. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood. Feeding is rarely required, but a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring can support flowering.

Genista pilosa size, spacing, and growth rate

Genista pilosa typically grows to around 30 to 60 centimetres tall and can spread up to 1 metre wide, forming a dense ground covering mound. Growth is moderate in sunny conditions with good drainage. When planting as ground cover, allow approximately 60 to 80 centimetres between plants to achieve full coverage over time.

Landscaping uses for Genista pilosa

Genista pilosa is perfect for rock gardens, slopes, and sunny borders where low growing structure and bright spring colour are desired. It works well as ground cover beneath taller shrubs or along pathways. Its drought tolerance makes it suitable for coastal and dry garden designs. The vibrant yellow blooms provide strong seasonal contrast against green foliage.
