How to grow Coprosma neglecta in NZ

Coprosma neglecta grows best in full sun or partial shade with well drained soil and good airflow. It tolerates coastal conditions, wind, and periods of dryness once established, making it highly suitable for a wide range of New Zealand landscapes. Water regularly during establishment to encourage strong root growth and healthy foliage development. Adding compost to the soil at planting time improves soil structure and moisture retention. Applying mulch around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds while plants establish.

Coprosma neglecta care tips

Coprosma neglecta is very low maintenance and requires minimal ongoing care once established. Water occasionally during prolonged dry periods to keep the foliage healthy and vibrant. Light trimming during spring or summer can be carried out to maintain shape or encourage denser growth if desired. Feed with a general garden fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage and vigorous development. Remove any damaged or weak stems as needed to keep plants healthy and tidy throughout the year.

Coprosma neglecta size, spacing, and growth rate

Coprosma neglecta typically grows to around 50 cm to 1 metre tall and spreads up to 1.5 metres wide with a dense low growing habit. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually forms an effective evergreen groundcover in suitable conditions. For mass planting or groundcover use, space plants approximately 70 cm to 1 metre apart to achieve full coverage over time. Regular watering during establishment will encourage strong healthy growth and dense foliage coverage.

Landscaping uses for Coprosma neglecta

Coprosma neglecta is perfect for adding low growing greenery, texture, and erosion control to garden spaces. It works beautifully in native planting schemes, coastal gardens, borders, and mass planting areas where the spreading habit creates dense ground coverage. This hardy evergreen shrub pairs attractively with grasses, flaxes, and other New Zealand native plants in layered landscape designs. Its tolerance of wind and dry conditions makes it especially useful for exposed sites and low maintenance landscapes.
