Cerastium tomentosum

5 from 4 customers

Cerastium tomentosum is an herbaceous perennial featuring tiny, white, star shaped flowers through spring and summer. These are complemented with small, silver-grey leaves held on creeping stem as it grows to 20 cm tall and 1 m wide. Cerastium tomentosum is commonly used as a groundcover, planted around the base of trees, included in borders, used in cottage gardens, or planted anywhere it can spread and be appreciated. It looks fantastic great when allowed to spill over a retaining wall.

How to grow Cerastium tomentosum in NZ

Plant Cerastium tomentosum in a sunny position with free draining soil. It performs well in poor, sandy, or rocky soils and is highly tolerant of dry conditions, making it ideal for NZ’s diverse climates. Water regularly during establishment, then only occasionally once established. Shear back after flowering to maintain compact growth and encourage a fresh flush of foliage.

Cerastium tomentosum care tips

Care for Cerastium tomentosum by trimming after flowering to prevent it becoming leggy and to encourage renewed growth. A light feed with a general fertiliser in spring will promote lush foliage and abundant blooms. Mulching is not usually required, as the plant prefers slightly dry conditions. It is hardy, low maintenance, and naturally resists most pests and diseases, making it a reliable choice for gardeners.

Cerastium tomentosum size, spacing, and growth rate

Cerastium tomentosum typically grows 15 to 20 cm tall and spreads 60 to 90 cm wide, forming a silvery mat of foliage. Space plants about 40 to 50 cm apart for quick ground coverage. It has a fast growth rate and often fills in gaps within a season. This spreading nature makes it an excellent plant for erosion control on banks and slopes.

Landscaping uses for Cerastium tomentosum

Cerastium tomentosum is perfect for rock gardens, edging, dry banks, and borders where a low maintenance groundcover is needed. Its white flowers create a striking contrast against its silver foliage, brightening garden spaces during summer. It looks spectacular spilling over walls or between paving stones. This plant complements both contemporary and cottage style gardens in NZ.
