Ajuga Atropurpurea is grown for its impressive foliage and flowers. It forms a spreading mound of purple-green leaves with spikes of blue flowers rising above the foliage from spring through summer. It typically grows to about 20 cm tall and will spread up to 80 cm wide. This evergreen requires a well-drained site with good summer moisture to perform. It is frost hardy, tolerant of coastal environments, and can be grown in full sun or partial shade. Ajuga Atropurpurea is commonly used as a groundcover, grown in a container, or used to transform a shady area. A mass planting of Bugleweed produces a striking display.
