Griselinia littoralis ‘Canterbury’, commonly known as Kapuka or NZ Broadleaf, is a fast-growing, NZ native shrub that features bright and glossy foliage. The green leaves are held densely on red-brown stems and are complemented with tiny, green-yellow flowers in spring. The flowers are followed by small black berries in summer which attract birds. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide and is often trimmed to sizes much less than this. Best results with this variety of Broadleaf are achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of wind, coastal conditions, dry periods, cool climates, and frost. Griselinia littoralis ‘Canterbury’ makes an excellent hedge and is also commonly included in mixed plantings, used to accentuate other foliage or flowering plants, or planted around water features. This is a dependable plant which can tolerate tough conditions and still look great. For a Griselinia ‘Canterbury’ hedge, space the plants 50 cm apart.
