How to grow Uncinia rubra in NZ

Uncinia rubra grows best in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well drained soil. Improve the soil with compost before planting and water regularly while the plant establishes. Apply a quality slow release fertiliser during spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage colour. It also performs well in containers with good drainage.

Uncinia rubra care tips

Uncinia rubra requires minimal maintenance once established. Water during prolonged dry periods and apply mulch around the base to retain soil moisture while keeping it clear of the crown. Remove any dead or damaged foliage as required to keep the clump looking fresh and attractive throughout the year.

Uncinia rubra size, spacing, and growth rate

Uncinia rubra typically grows 30 to 50 centimetres tall with a spread of 30 to 45 centimetres. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually develops into dense colourful clumps. Space plants about 30 to 40 centimetres apart for borders, edging, or mass planting.

Landscaping uses for Uncinia rubra

Uncinia rubra is ideal for borders, edging, rock gardens, containers, mass planting, and contemporary landscapes. The rich red bronze foliage provides year round colour and contrasts beautifully with green shrubs and flowering perennials. It also performs well in coastal and low maintenance gardens.
