How to grow Stipa gigantea in NZ

To grow Stipa gigantea (Giant Oat Grass) in NZ, choose a sunny position with free-draining soil. Plant in spring or autumn, spacing plants at least 80–100 cm apart to allow for their large arching form. Water regularly during establishment, then only in extended dry periods, as they are drought-tolerant. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth. Cut back old flower stems and tidy foliage in late winter before new growth appears.

Stipa gigantea care tips

Stipa gigantea is very low-maintenance once established. Water during prolonged dry periods, especially in the first year. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support strong growth and flower production. Remove spent flower stems and any damaged foliage in late winter to keep the plant looking tidy. Avoid overly wet or poorly drained soils, as this can cause root rot. Stipa gigantea is hardy and wind-tolerant, making it ideal for NZ gardens.
