How to grow Spinifex sericeus (Beach Spinifex) in NZ

Spinifex sericeus (Beach Spinifex) grows best in sandy, well drained soils and full sun. It is extremely tolerant of salt, wind, and drought, thriving in harsh coastal conditions. When planting, space clumps across dunes or sandy areas to encourage natural spreading. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering once the plant takes hold. This native grass quickly forms dense mats that bind sand effectively and help restore coastal dune ecosystems.

Spinifex sericeus (Beach Spinifex) care tips

Spinifex sericeus (Beach Spinifex) requires very little maintenance once established. Water young plants regularly to help roots develop, especially in the first summer. Avoid overwatering or rich soils, as this plant prefers dry, sandy conditions. No fertiliser is necessary. Pruning is not needed, but older clumps can be tidied by removing dead leaves. Beach Spinifex thrives with minimal care and is one of the most resilient native grasses for NZ coastal environments.

Spinifex sericeus (Beach Spinifex) size, spacing, and growth rate

Spinifex sericeus (Beach Spinifex) forms low mounds 30–50 cm tall and spreads up to 2 metres wide through creeping stolons. It grows rapidly in sandy soil, stabilising dunes and covering exposed areas quickly. When planting for erosion control or coastal landscaping, space plants 50–80 cm apart. Its vigorous growth and tolerance to harsh conditions make it one of NZ’s most effective native species for coastal restoration and low maintenance landscaping.

Landscaping uses for Spinifex sericeus (Beach Spinifex)

Spinifex sericeus (Beach Spinifex) is perfect for coastal gardens, dune restoration, and erosion control. It provides excellent groundcover on sandy slopes and helps stabilise soil in windy, exposed areas. The silvery foliage adds texture and colour contrast to native coastal plantings. It pairs well with other hardy natives such as Pingao, Coprosma, and Carex species, creating a natural coastal look that requires very little upkeep.
