Scirpus polystachyus, commonly known as Many-Spiked Bulrush, is a native New Zealand sedge growing up to 1.5 metres tall. It features multiple slender, erect stems topped with clusters of small, brown flower spikes. This hardy plant thrives in wetlands, marshes, and along waterways, preferring moist to waterlogged soils. Scirpus polystachyus is excellent for stabilising banks, controlling erosion, and providing habitat for native birds and aquatic life. Its dense, upright growth makes it ideal for naturalistic wetland restoration and ecological planting projects across New Zealand.
