Scirpus lacustris, commonly known as Common Bulrush or Great Bulrush, is a tall, robust wetland plant native to New Zealand. It can grow up to 2.5 metres tall, featuring stiff, erect green stems and distinctive brown flower heads that appear in summer. This species thrives in shallow water, marshes, and along lake edges, preferring waterlogged or muddy soils. Scirpus lacustris is excellent for stabilising shorelines, controlling erosion, and providing habitat for native birds and aquatic life. Its dense growth makes it valuable for naturalistic wetland restoration and water filtration projects.
