Scirpus ferrugineus, commonly known as Rusty Bulrush, is a native New Zealand sedge growing up to 1.5 metres tall. It features slender, erect stems with rusty-brown flower clusters that appear in summer, adding seasonal colour to wetland areas. This hardy plant thrives in swampy, waterlogged soils and along stream edges, making it ideal for stabilising wetlands and controlling erosion. Scirpus ferrugineus provides valuable habitat for native wildlife and is well suited to naturalistic plantings and ecological restoration projects throughout New Zealand’s wet environments.
