Scirpus americanus, commonly known as American Bulrush or Chairmaker’s Bulrush, is a robust, tall native sedge that can grow up to 2 metres high. It features stiff, upright green stems and produces dense clusters of brownish flower heads in summer. This plant thrives in wetlands, marshes, and along water edges, preferring moist to waterlogged soils. Scirpus americanus is excellent for stabilising banks, controlling erosion, and providing habitat for native wildlife. Its strong, fibrous stems have traditionally been used in weaving and craft, making it both an ecological and cultural asset in New Zealand’s natural landscapes.
