How to grow Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani in NZ

Plant in shallow water or very moist soil in full sun to partial shade. Ideal water depth is 10–30 cm above the crown. It will spread naturally in suitable conditions, forming dense clumps. Tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, and is suitable for both fresh and brackish water. Once established, it requires minimal maintenance and will return reliably each year.

Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani care tips

Remove old or damaged stems in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth. If planted in ponds or small water gardens, consider containing it in large aquatic baskets to control spread. It is generally pest and disease free and highly tolerant of fluctuating water levels.

Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani size, spacing, and growth rate

Reaches 1.5–3 m tall with a spread of 1–1.5 m. Space clumps 60–90 cm apart for quick coverage. It has a fast growth rate under ideal conditions.

Landscaping uses for Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani

Softstem Bulrush is ideal for naturalising around ponds, dams, and wetland areas where it provides height, texture, and movement. It is excellent for erosion control on banks, water filtration in constructed wetlands, and creating habitat for fish, frogs, and birds. Its vertical stems create a striking contrast to horizontal water surfaces and can be used in both ornamental and ecological planting designs.
