How to grow Restio quadratus in NZ

Restio quadratus grows best in full sun with well drained soil. Water regularly during establishment, then only during prolonged dry periods. Avoid waterlogged sites and improve heavy soils with organic matter if needed. Apply a light dressing of slow release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth. A sunny open position provides the strongest stems and best overall performance.

Restio quadratus care tips

Restio quadratus is very easy to maintain once established. Remove any old or damaged stems near the base to keep the clump tidy and encourage fresh growth. Water during extended dry weather and apply mulch to conserve soil moisture while keeping it clear of the crown. Little pruning is required and the plant retains its attractive form throughout the year.

Restio quadratus size, spacing, and growth rate

Restio quadratus typically grows to around 1.2 to 1.8 metres tall with a spread of about 1 metre. Space plants around 1 metre apart to allow healthy development and airflow. Growth is moderate, forming dense upright clumps over several seasons. Its compact habit makes it suitable for feature planting as well as mass planting.

Landscaping uses for Restio quadratus

Restio quadratus is ideal for contemporary gardens, coastal landscapes, rain gardens, and mixed borders where its upright stems provide texture and contrast. It combines beautifully with grasses, succulents, and flowering perennials while adding movement in the breeze. It is also effective in mass plantings and as an architectural accent in modern landscape designs.
