Growing Poa colensoi Successfully in NZ

Poa colensoi thrives in alpine to subalpine regions but adapts well to garden settings. Plant in full sun or light shade in free-draining soil. It tolerates frost, wind, and dry conditions, making it ideal for low-maintenance landscapes and revegetation. Space plants 30-40 cm apart for mass plantings. Cut back old foliage in late winter to promote fresh growth and maintain a tidy, compact form.

Poa colensoi Care Tips

Poa colensoi is easy to care for once established. Water young plants regularly until roots develop, then only during extended dry periods. Apply mulch to suppress weeds and conserve moisture. Avoid overly rich or damp soils, as this can cause rot. Trim back dead or untidy foliage in late winter or early spring to keep the plant looking fresh. No fertiliser is typically needed, making this a low-maintenance choice for NZ gardens.

Plant Size and Spacing

Poa colensoi typically grows to a height of around 30-50 cm and a width of 30 cm, forming compact, upright tussocks with fine, arching leaves. When planting for mass coverage or revegetation, space individual plants approximately 30-40 cm apart. This allows enough room for each tussock to develop fully while creating a dense, cohesive planting over time.
