Ophiopogon chingii 'Sparkler', commonly known as Mondo Grass, is a clump-forming plant with fine, grass-like, dark green foliage. Flower spikes appear in summer, bearing tiny, mauve-white flowers as it grows to 20 cm tall and 30 cm wide. Ophiopogon 'Sparkler' looks best when mass-planted and is commonly used in rock gardens, included in borders, mass-planted as a ground cover, or maintained in a container.

How to grow Ophiopogon chingii 'Sparkler' in NZ

Ophiopogon chingii 'Sparkler' grows well in New Zealand’s mild climate and is best planted in partial shade to full sun. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and forms attractive clumps of delicate, green and white variegated foliage. Water regularly during establishment, then only in dry spells. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Trim back tired foliage in late winter or early spring to keep the plant looking fresh. ‘Sparkler’ is ideal for borders, containers, and soft underplanting in shaded or semi-shaded gardens.

Ophiopogon chingii 'Sparkler' is low-maintenance once established. Water regularly during the first year, especially in dry conditions. It prefers partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Ideal for edging, containers, or ground cover in shaded areas.
