How to grow Zebra Grass in NZ

Zebra Grass (Miscanthus 'Zebrinus') grows best in full sun and well-drained soil in most parts of New Zealand. It prefers consistent moisture during the growing season but can tolerate dry spells once established. Plant in spring or autumn, spacing each plant about 1 metre apart to accommodate its mature size. Water regularly during the first year to encourage deep rooting. Cut back the old foliage to 10–15 cm above ground in late winter before new shoots emerge. Zebra Grass is hardy, low-maintenance, and thrives in both coastal and inland NZ gardens.

Zebra Grass care tips

To care for Zebra Grass in NZ, plant it in a sunny spot with well-drained soil and water regularly during its first growing season. Once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions but benefits from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry spells. Cut back the old foliage to 10–15 cm above ground in late winter to allow fresh growth to emerge in spring. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring if growth slows. Divide clumps every few years in autumn or spring to maintain plant vigour. Zebra Grass is generally pest and disease resistant and needs minimal maintenance.

Is Zebra Grass invasive?

Zebra Grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus') is not considered invasive in New Zealand. While some Miscanthus species have invasive tendencies in certain regions overseas, particularly in parts of the United States, the cultivated forms like 'Zebrinus' are typically clump-forming rather than spreading aggressively by rhizomes or seed. In NZ gardens, it remains well behaved, slowly expanding from the base without becoming a nuisance. Regular maintenance, such as removing spent flower heads if needed, helps ensure it stays tidy and contained.

Zebra Grass height and spacing

Zebra Grass (Miscanthus Zebrinus) typically grows to 1.5 to 2 metres tall when in flower, with a clump spread of around 1 metre wide. For planting, space individual plants about 1 metre apart to allow them room to develop their full size and to create a dense, dramatic display.
