Miscanthus sinensis (Japanese Silver Grass)

Miscanthus sinensis is an ornamental grass that grows as a clump of narrow, arching, green leaves. The colouring gives a light silver-green effect to the foliage, hence the common name, Japanese Silver Grass. Tall spikes of plum-like flowers are borne in summer, which are cream with a pink tone as they grow to 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide. Miscanthus sinensis is commonly included in mixed plantings, planted around a water feature, used as a backdrop for other plants, or included in borders.

How to grow Miscanthus sinensis in NZ

Miscanthus sinensis grows well in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil in most parts of New Zealand. It tolerates a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, and can handle coastal wind and light frosts once established. Plant in spring or autumn, spacing plants 80 to 100 cm apart depending on the variety. Water regularly during the first growing season, then reduce watering as the plant becomes more drought-tolerant. Cut back old foliage to about 10–15 cm in late winter before new shoots emerge. This ornamental grass is low-maintenance and adds strong vertical form and movement to NZ gardens.

Miscanthus sinensis care tips

To care for Miscanthus sinensis in NZ, plant it in a sunny spot with well-drained soil and water regularly during its first year. Once established, it becomes drought-tolerant and requires minimal upkeep. In late winter, cut back old foliage to 10–15 cm above the ground to encourage fresh growth in spring. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring if needed, and divide clumps every 3 to 5 years to maintain plant health and size. Miscanthus sinensis is generally pest and disease-resistant, making it an easy-care choice for many garden styles.

How to prune Miscanthus sinensis (Japanese Silver Grass)

To prune Miscanthus sinensis (Japanese Silver Grass), wait until late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. Using sharp shears or hedge trimmers, cut the entire clump back to about 10 to 15 cm above ground level. This removes the old, dry foliage and allows fresh shoots to emerge cleanly. Avoid pruning in autumn, as the dried seed heads and foliage provide winter interest and protect the crown from frost. Always wear gloves, as the grass blades can be sharp.
