How to grow Miscanthus 'Gracillimus' in NZ

Miscanthus 'Gracillimus' grows best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil in most parts of New Zealand. It is tolerant of light frosts, coastal wind, and a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils. Plant in spring or autumn, spacing plants about 80 to 100 cm apart to allow for their mature size and graceful arching habit. Water regularly during the first growing season, then reduce watering as the plant becomes established and more drought-tolerant. Cut back the old foliage to 10–15 cm above ground in late winter to encourage healthy new growth. This ornamental grass adds height, movement, and texture to NZ gardens with minimal maintenance.

Miscanthus 'Gracillimus' care tips

To care for Miscanthus 'Gracillimus' in NZ, plant it in full sun with well-drained soil and water regularly during its first year. Once established, it becomes drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. Cut back old foliage to 10–15 cm above the ground in late winter to make way for fresh spring growth. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring if needed, and divide clumps every 3 to 5 years to maintain plant vigour. This grass is pest and disease-resistant and provides a graceful texture and seasonal interest throughout the growing season.

How to prune Miscanthus 'Gracillimus'

To prune Miscanthus 'Gracillimus', wait until late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Use sharp shears or hedge trimmers to cut the entire clump back to about 10 to 15 cm above ground level. This clears away old foliage and encourages strong, fresh growth for the new season. Avoid pruning in autumn, as the dried foliage and flower heads provide winter interest and protect the crown from frost. Wear gloves when pruning, as the leaves can be sharp.
