Microlaena avenacea, commonly known as Brown Top or Native Rice Grass, is a native New Zealand tussock grass growing up to 60 cm tall. It features slender, arching green leaves and delicate seed heads that mature to a golden-brown colour. This hardy grass thrives in a variety of soils, preferring well-drained sites with moderate moisture. Microlaena avenacea is ideal for erosion control, groundcover, and low-maintenance lawns in native or naturalistic garden designs. Its tolerance to shade and drought makes it versatile for sustainable landscaping throughout New Zealand.
