Growing Machaerina sinclairii Successfully in NZ

Machaerina sinclairii, also known as Ngāwhā or Thatch Sedge, is a hardy, native NZ sedge ideal for naturalistic and wetland plantings. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained to boggy soils. This clump-forming plant tolerates wind, coastal exposure, and seasonal wetness, making it perfect for revegetation, erosion control, or native gardens. With minimal maintenance once established, it's a robust and attractive choice for enhancing biodiversity in New Zealand landscapes.

Machaerina sinclairii Care Tips

Plant Machaerina sinclairii in full sun to part shade with moist, well-drained or boggy soil. Water regularly during establishment, especially in dry conditions. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and reduce weed growth. Trim back dead or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring to keep the plant tidy. It typically requires no fertiliser and is resistant to most pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for native and wetland gardens.

Plant Size and Spacing

Machaerina sinclairii typically grows 1–1.5 metres tall and spreads up to 1 metre wide. For dense coverage in wetland or landscape plantings, space plants 80–100 cm apart. This allows each clump room to mature while achieving good visual impact and erosion control.
