Sand Wind Grass, Common Wind Grass, Blown Grass

Lachnagrostis billardierei, commonly known as Sand Wind Grass, is a NZ native, perennial grass with dark green leaf blades. It typically grows in sandy soils, primarily along or near coastlines, where it forms distinctive circular tufts. Straw-coloured flowers adorn the plant during summer. What growing conditions does Lachnagrostis billardierei prefer?

Lachnagrostis billardierei prefers full sun to light shade and grows best in well-drained, sandy or light soils, though it tolerates poor fertility. It thrives in moist conditions but can handle seasonal dryness once established. Hardy to frost, wind, and coastal exposure, it is well-suited to open habitats such as dunes, riverbanks, and disturbed sites. This low-maintenance native grass is ideal for ecological restoration and naturalistic planting throughout New Zealand.
