How to grow Juncus caespiticius

To grow Juncus caespiticius (commonly known as grassy rush), select a sunny to partially shaded site with consistently moist to wet soil. This rush thrives in boggy conditions, making it ideal for planting near ponds, streams, wetlands, or areas with poor drainage. It prefers loamy to clay soils, tolerates seasonal inundation, and grows well in both acidic and neutral pH levels. Plant during cooler months and space the plants 30–50 cm apart to allow for natural clump expansion. Keep the soil moist during establishment, particularly in drier areas. Once established, Juncus caespiticius requires little maintenance. It can be cut back in late winter if needed to tidy the plant and encourage fresh growth. This hardy, native New Zealand rush is excellent for riparian planting, erosion control, and stormwater filtration, and it provides valuable habitat for native wildlife.
