Kāretu, Scented Grass
Hierochloe redolens, commonly known as Kāretu or Scented Grass, is a NZ native, perennial grass with dark green blades and purple leaf bases. This grass is known for its distinctive sweet, aromatic scent, often described as resembling coconut or fresh-mown hay, which becomes stronger when the leaves are dried. It typically grows to 80-100 cm tall and the same wide. Hierochloe redolens is commonly added to a mixed planting or mass planted on a bank.
