Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' (Japanese Golden Grass)

How to grow Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' in NZ

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' grows best in NZ in a sheltered position with partial shade and rich, free-draining soil. Its golden-striped foliage thrives in consistent moisture, so water regularly during dry periods without letting the soil become waterlogged. Protect from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun to maintain vibrant leaf colour. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser and cut back old foliage in late winter to encourage fresh new growth.

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' care tips

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' thrives in part to full shade and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. In New Zealand, it performs best in sheltered spots with dappled light, making it ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or container plantings. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in summer, to prevent the foliage from browning. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppresses weeds. In late winter or early spring, cut back old foliage to encourage fresh new growth. This grass is slow-growing but clump-forming and non-invasive, making it easy to manage. It's also frost-hardy and deer-resistant.

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' (Japanese Golden Grass) size, spacing, and growth rate

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' (Japanese Golden Grass) typically reaches about 1 m tall and 1 m wide in suitable conditions.
