Growing Gahnia xanthocarpa Successfully in NZ

Gahnia xanthocarpa, commonly known as Golden-fruited Sedge, is a hardy native plant ideal for forest margins, wetlands, and native revegetation projects in New Zealand. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, free-draining soil, but will tolerate drier conditions once established. Known for its upright, tough foliage and striking golden seed heads, this sedge provides excellent habitat and structure in natural landscapes. It’s low-maintenance, wind-tolerant, and well-suited to erosion control.

Gahnia xanthocarpa Care Tips

Plant Gahnia xanthocarpa in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots, then reduce watering as it becomes drought-tolerant. Remove dead or damaged foliage in late winter to keep the plant tidy. It thrives in poor soils and requires little or no fertiliser. Hardy to wind and frost, this sedge is ideal for low-maintenance planting in native gardens and ecological restoration projects.

Plant Size and Spacing

Gahnia xanthocarpa typically grows 1–1.5 metres tall and 1–1.2 metres wide, forming dense, upright clumps. For best results, space plants approximately 1–1.2 metres apart to allow for their mature growth. This spacing supports adequate coverage in restoration work, erosion control, or naturalistic native plantings.
