Ficinia spiralis (Golden Pingao)

Pingao, Golden Sand Sedge, Pikao, Golden Pingao

Ficinia spiralis, commonly known as Pikao or Golden Pingao, is a grass that is found naturally on active dunes. The leaves emerge green and develop yellow tones as the soil or dune dries out. It typically grows to 70 cm tall and 1 m wide, but will colonise a large area given time. Ficinia spiralis favours slopes and moving sand, hence it is ideal for coastal environments. That said, it will still perform well on non-sandy slopes and banks and should be mass-planted.

Growing Ficinia spiralis Successfully in NZ

Ficinia spiralis, commonly known as Pingao or Golden Sand Sedge, is a treasured native plant used for dune restoration and ornamental coastal plantings. It thrives in full sun and sandy, free-draining soils typical of coastal environments. This hardy species is tolerant of wind, salt spray, and dry conditions, making it ideal for stabilising dunes. In gardens, Pingao adds striking colour and texture. For optimal results, plant in well-exposed, well-drained locations and water occasionally during the establishment period.

Ficinia spiralis Care Tips

Plant Ficinia spiralis in full sun and sandy, well-drained soil for optimal growth. It is highly tolerant of coastal winds, salt spray, and drought once established. Water during the first season to help roots establish, then only during prolonged dry spells. Avoid rich or compacted soils, which can hinder its natural dune-binding ability. Trim back dead foliage in late winter to maintain appearance.

Plant Size and Spacing

Ficinia spiralis typically grows to a height of about 30–60 cm and a width of 50–70 cm, forming spreading clumps. When planting, space individuals approximately 50–70 cm apart to allow for natural spread and dune-binding growth. This spacing ensures adequate ground coverage for erosion control and visual impact in coastal plantings or native restoration projects.
