How to grow Festuca glauca in NZ

Festuca glauca grows best in full sun with fertile free draining soil. Improve the planting area with compost before planting and ensure excess water drains away freely. Water regularly while the plant establishes, then reduce watering once established. A sunny position helps maintain the strongest blue foliage colour.

Festuca glauca care tips

Festuca glauca requires very little maintenance. Feed during spring with a light application of slow release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth. Remove old foliage by combing through the clump or lightly trimming during late winter to keep the plant fresh and tidy. Avoid heavy wet soils throughout the year.

Festuca glauca size, spacing, and growth rate

Festuca glauca typically grows to around twenty five to thirty centimetres tall and wide. Space plants about thirty to forty centimetres apart to create an attractive edging or mass planting. Growth is moderate, forming neat dense clumps that retain their tidy shape throughout the year.

Landscaping uses for Festuca glauca

Festuca glauca is ideal for borders, rock gardens, edging, decorative containers, coastal gardens, and mass planting. The blue foliage provides striking contrast with green shrubs, flowering perennials, and natural stone while adding year round structure to the landscape.
