Cyperus ustulatus (Giant Umbrella Sedge)

Giant Umbrella Sedge, Toetoe Upoko-tangata

Cyperus ustulatus, commonly known as the Giant Umbrella Sedge, is a large and robust NZ native grass. It grows as a clump and produces dark green leaves that have minute, sharp teeth along the margins. The foliage is complemented with green flowers in summer, which age to brown as it grows to 1.5 metres high and the same width. Cyperus ustulatus is commonly planted beside pools or streams, included in revegetation and riparian plantings, used in wetland gardens, or mass planted in areas where a hardy and aesthetic grass is required.

Growing Cyperus ustulatus Successfully in NZ

Cyperus ustulatus thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, fertile, free-draining soil. It naturally occurs along stream banks, wetlands, and coastal areas, making it ideal for riparian and restoration planting. Plant in a damp position and water regularly during dry periods, especially when establishing. It tolerates wind, light frost, and exposure to coastal conditions. With its bold, upright form, Cyperus ustulatus adds texture and structure to native landscapes.

Cyperus ustulatus Care Tips

Cyperus ustulatus grows best in moist, fertile soil and full sun to partial shade. Keep the soil consistently damp, especially during establishment and in dry periods. It tolerates coastal exposure, wind, and light frosts, making it ideal for riparian or wetland planting. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppresses weeds. Minimal maintenance is needed; remove old or damaged foliage in late winter to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth in spring.

Giant Umbrella Sedge Size and Spacing

Cyperus ustulatus typically grows 1.5-2.5 metres tall and spreads 1-1.5 metres wide. For mass planting or restoration work, space plants 1 to 1.2 metres apart to allow for full foliage development and natural spread. This spacing ensures good airflow, helps prevent overcrowding, and promotes better growth.
