How to grow Cyperus 'King Tut' in NZ

Cyperus 'King Tut'grows well in warm, sheltered areas of New Zealand. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist to wet soils, which makes it ideal for pond edges, rain gardens, or damp spots. Plant in rich, loamy soil and water frequently, especially in dry weather. It can also be grown in containers kept in trays of water. Mulch to retain moisture and apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring. Protect from frost in cooler regions, as freezing temperatures can damage it. Trim old stems as needed to encourage fresh, upright growth.

Cyperus 'King Tut' care tips

Grow in full sun to partial shade with consistently moist or wet soil. Water regularly, especially in dry weather, to keep the roots damp. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage lush growth. Remove old or damaged stems to maintain a tidy appearance. In cooler regions, protect from frost or grow in containers that can be moved to shelter over winter. Mulch to retain soil moisture.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Cyperus 'King Tut' typically grows to 1–1.5 metres tall and 60–90 cm wide. For mass planting or a bold architectural effect, space plants 60–90 cm apart. It has a fast growth rate, quickly producing tall, umbrella-like stems during the warmer months, especially when kept consistently moist.
