Chondropetalum elephantinum Details

Chondropetalum elephantinum, commonly known as Large Cape Rush, is a South African plant that grows as a dense clump of tall stems. It has interesting, dark brown-gold bands along the length of each mid-green stem. Small brown flowers are borne as clusters during summer and the weight of these causes the stems to arch downwards. It typically grows to 1.2 m tall and the same wide, performing best when grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. Plants are tolerant of coastal conditions, extended dry periods, moderate frost, poorly drained soils, and wind. Chondropetalum elephantinum is commonly included in a mixed planting, planted around the edge of water features, in borders, or grown anywhere the aesthetics of this plant can be appreciated.
