Above all else, ensure it is grown in well-drained soil that does not become waterlogged. Similarly, if you intend to grow Chionochloa flavicans in a pot, ensure that only potting mix is used and never garden soil. After planting, be sure to spread native plant fertiliser across the soil surface. Use indoor plant fertiliser only if you are growing the plant in a pot.

What size does Chionochloa flavicans grow to?

Chionochloa flavicans grows to about 90 cm tall and the same wide, and it will reach this within three years with optimal growing conditions. If the growing conditions are less favourable, the plants may stay smaller and will take longer to reach their mature size.

Why is Chionochloa flavicans called Miniature Toetoe?

The name "Miniature Toetoe" for Chionochloa flavicans comes from its visual resemblance to the larger, more well-known toetoe species, Austroderia. Chionochloa flavicans produces feathery, plume-like flower heads that bear a resemblance to the flowering plumes of the larger toetoe. The overall form and the way the flower heads emerge from the foliage create a visual similarity. Chionochloa flavicans is significantly smaller than typical toetoe species, hence its name "miniature". It's important to note that botanically, Chionochloa and Austroderia (toetoe) are different genera. Therefore, while the visual comparison is valid, the name is a common name rather than a strict botanical one.
