Baumea rubiginosa (Orange Nutsedge)

Baumea rubiginosa, commonly known as the Orange Nut Sedge, is a vigorous, NZ native rush that features slender, green foliage. Red-brown seed heads are borne during summer above the foliage, which adds an interesting element to this plant as it grows to 1.5 m wide and 1 m high. Baumea rubiginosa is commonly used to revegetate wetlands but can also be used around pond edges, alongside streams, or in boggy areas.

How to grow Baumea rubiginosa

Baumea rubiginosa thrives best in consistently moist or wet soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is ideal for planting around ponds, wetlands, drainage areas, or rain gardens. Select a site that remains damp year-round and avoid dry, exposed areas. Space plants 40-60 cm apart for adequate coverage. Water regularly both during establishment and in dry spells. It tolerates seasonal flooding and poor soils, making it perfect for stabilising wetland margins or erosion-prone zones.

Baumea rubiginosa (Orange Nutsedge) Care

Orange Nutsedge thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers consistently damp to waterlogged soils. This hardy plant can tolerate shallow water (up to 30 cm deep) and occasional flooding. Regular watering is essential during establishment, especially when plants are planted in drier soils. Prune dead or damaged stems in late winter or early spring to maintain a neat appearance and encourage new growth. It rarely needs fertilising but may benefit from a slow-release fertiliser in nutrient-poor sites. Baumea rubiginosa is frost-hardy and excellent for erosion control, habitat creation, and naturalistic landscaping around water features.
