Baumea juncea (Bare Twig Rush)

Baumea juncea, commonly known as the Bare Twig Rush, is a NZ native rush grown for its aesthetics and ability to colonise extremely wet soils. The roots of this grass spread such that it can easily colonise an area of 1 m in three years as it grows to 1 m tall. Baumea juncea is a favoured plant among landscape designers constructing wetland areas and is also great for revegetation plantings.

Baumea juncea thrives in damp soils and is perfect for coastal gardens, wetland edges, or rain gardens. Plant in full sun to partial shade in soils that retain moisture or are seasonally wet. It tolerates wind, salt spray, and poor soils, making it an ideal choice for challenging coastal or low-lying sites. Space plants about 30-60 cm apart. Water during prolonged dry spells to keep roots moist, especially when establishing. Minimal maintenance is required.
