Jointed Twig Rush

Baumea articulata, commonly known as the Jointed Twig Rush, this is an attractive, NZ native grass grown for its aesthetics and ability to handle and colonise extremely wet soils. It forms a dense sward as it grows to 1.5 m tall, which provides a great habitat for frogs and water birds. New leaves emerge light green then age to dark green, and are complemented with brown flower heads through summer. Baumea articulata will happily grow in fresh, standing water (e.g., dams, swamps, creeks, and drainage areas) up to 1 m deep. This is a favoured plant among landscape designers constructing wetland areas.

How to grow Baumea articulata?

Baumea articulata, or Jointed Twig-Rush, is a New Zealand native wetland plant that thrives in full sun to part shade and permanently damp or shallow water environments such as pond edges, swales, or boggy soils. It prefers rich, loamy or silty soil and can be planted directly in wet ground or in aquatic baskets submerged up to 15 cm deep. This rush spreads by rhizomes, forming upright clumps that provide excellent erosion control and habitat value. Keep the soil consistently moist and cut back old stems in late winter to encourage fresh growth. Frost-hardy and low-maintenance, Baumea articulata is ideal for wetland gardens, restoration projects, and naturalistic landscapes.

Baumea articulata care

Baumea articulata is a hardy, low-maintenance wetland plant that thrives in consistently moist or shallow water conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and grows best in rich, loamy or silty soils but will tolerate a range of soil types as long as they remain wet. Keep the root zone permanently damp—this plant is not suited to drying out. While feeding is generally unnecessary, an occasional aquatic fertiliser in spring can support stronger growth. Prune back old or dead stems in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy appearance and promote healthy regrowth. Baumea articulata is frost-tolerant and ideal for erosion control, habitat planting, and water garden features.
