Austroderia fulvida (Toetoe)

Toetoe, Pampas Grass, Toi Toi

Austroderia fulvida, commonly known as Toetoe or Toi Toi, is a large and vigorous NZ native grass. It bears long, narrow, mid-green leaves that are held with a gentle arch. Stems rise above the foliage during summer and autumn to bear large and feathery flower plumes as it grows to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide. Austroderia fulvida is commonly used for stabilising soils, riparian plantings, and revegetation projects, but also suits being planted for shelter, screening, or as a habitat for wildlife.

How to Grow Toetoe (Austroderia species)

Toetoe thrives in full sun and well-drained soils but is also tolerant of poor, sandy, or clay conditions. Choose an open, sunny site with space for its arching, fountain-like form. Plant anytime from autumn to spring, spacing plants 1.5 to 2 metres apart. Water during dry spells in the first year to help establish strong roots, and after that, they should have become drought-tolerant. Mulching helps suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Avoid overwatering or heavy shade.

Austroderia fulvida care

Austroderia fulvida (Toetoe) is a hardy, low-maintenance native grass that thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers free-draining soil and is tolerant of dry conditions once established, though it benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. In early spring, cut back old or dead foliage to rejuvenate the plant and encourage fresh, upright growth. Feeding is rarely needed, but a light application of general-purpose fertiliser in spring can boost performance, especially in poor soils. Austroderia fulvida is frost-hardy, wind-tolerant, and excellent for coastal, rural, and restoration planting.
