Austroderia fulvida

Toi Toi, Pampas Grass

Austroderia fulvida, commonly known as Toetoe or Toi Toi, is a large and vigorous NZ native grass. It bears long and narrow, mid-green leaves which are held with a gentle arch. Stems rise above the foliage during summer and autumn to bear large and feathery, flower plumes as it grows to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide. Austroderia fulvida is commonly used for stabilising soils, riparian plantings, and revegetation projects but also suits being planted for shelter, screening, or as a habitat for wildlife.

How to grow Austroderia fulvida?

Austroderia fulvida, formerly known as Cortaderia fulvida, is a graceful New Zealand native grass valued for its golden flowering plumes and arching foliage. To grow it successfully, choose a sunny to partly shaded position with free-draining soil—though it tolerates a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy. It is drought-tolerant once established but performs best with regular watering during prolonged dry spells, especially in its first year. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils. Plant in an open space where it can develop its natural form, allowing at least 1.5–2 metres of room. Mulch around the base to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Prune back dead or spent foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Austroderia fulvida is frost-hardy and wind-tolerant, making it ideal for coastal gardens, mass plantings, erosion control, and native revegetation projects.

Austroderia fulvida care

Austroderia fulvida (Toetoe) is a hardy, low-maintenance native grass that thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers free-draining soil and is tolerant of dry conditions once established, though it benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. In early spring, cut back old or dead foliage to rejuvenate the plant and encourage fresh, upright growth. Feeding is rarely needed, but a light application of general-purpose fertiliser in spring can boost performance, especially in poor soils. Austroderia fulvida is frost-hardy, wind-tolerant, and excellent for coastal, rural, and restoration planting. Its golden flower plumes and arching foliage provide texture and movement in the landscape, making it ideal for mass plantings, borders, or erosion control.
