Blended Kikuyu Lawn Seed

A Kikuyu lawn is suited to warmer regions and coastal areas where hot and humid summers are less well suited to other turf species. The variety of Kikuyu grass seed sold by The Plant Company is Regal Green which produces a carpet of lush green leaves and tolerates both summer drought and high humidity. The Kikuyu grass seed sold by The Plant Company has 15% Kikuyu seed and 85% annual Italian ryegrass seed. This Kikuyu grass seed blend is a standard blend across the turf industry with the rye seed necessary to support the Kikuyu grass seedlings as they establish. The annual rye grass dies out at the end of the first summer to leave a pure stand of Kikuyu grass. The ideal mowing height is 25 mm and seeding rate is 40 grams per square metre. Kikuyu lawns are well suited to all regions from Waikato north.

How to grow Premium Kikuyu Grass Seed in NZ

Kikuyu grass requires little in the way of fertiliser inputs and are easy care, hence their popularity. We recommend allowing the weeds to germinate and then spraying with Glyphosate at least 2-3 times before the Kikuyu lawn seed is applied. Best results are achieved when the grass seed is spread from late spring through until mid-autumn with irrigation, and on a site that is well-drained. Broadleaf weeds that germinate can be addressed with products such as TurfClean. The ideal mowing height is 25 mm and seeding rate is 40 grams per square metre. Questions and Answers

Have a question about Kikuyu (Blended Kikuyu Lawn Seed)? We are here to help.

Hi We have just bought Kikuyu lawn seed. Is it recommended to buy a starter fertiliser and do we need to use a pre emergent herbicide? Thank-you.

Yes, you should use new lawn fertiliser and spread with the seed. We do recommend using a Glyphosate spray 1-2 days before seeding to take out any foreign weeds. Ideally, do this 1-2 times before seeding to reduce the weed population. That is, wait for a green tinge of weeds, spray, repeat this 7-10 days later, then seed the lawn.

Hi there, I'm planting a new lawn in a shady area under large pohutakawa trees. The area has been used for citrus that weren't getting enough light to fruit. The lawn is roughly 60m2. We're in Auckland, so pretty warm, and no frosts where we are. The lawn is for my children to have a space to play football. We're on a well draining site. I'm thinking about purchasing the Kikuyu mix, how much will I need? Is this the right variety for our needs?

Kikuyu sounds like the best option. Work on 50 grams per square metre, so 3 kg in this instance.

Hi there, planning to do a lawn renovation. Wanting to put down a glyphosate spray a couple times before seeding. How long should I wait after the last weed killer spray before seeding? Thanks, Allen

24 hours is the time we generally recommend to allow the soil microbes to deactivate the glyphosate.

We love Azalea Pink Ice and Lomandra 'Tanika' as much as anyone, but part of the fun is discovering Hydrangea Pee Wee, Hebe diosmifolia (Veronica diosmifolia), and Pseudowintera Red Glow'.
