How to grow the Tamarillo tree 'Tango' in NZ

Tamarillo 'Tango' grows best in warm, frost-free areas of New Zealand. Select a sunny, sheltered site with well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost. Plant in spring after the risk of frost has passed, and water regularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and again in summer to support flowering and fruiting. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly after fruiting to encourage a strong framework and control height. Protect young plants from frost and wind.

Tamarillo 'Tango' care tips

Plant in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil and shelter from wind and frost. Water regularly, especially during dry spells and fruiting. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer to support strong growth and good fruit production. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Prune after harvest to maintain shape and encourage new fruiting wood. In cooler regions, protect young plants with frost cloth or grow in containers that can be moved to shelter.

Tamarillo tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Tamarillo 'Tango' typically grows to 2–3 metres tall and 1.5–2 metres wide. For optimal airflow and fruit production, space trees 2–2.5 metres apart. It has a fast growth rate, often reaching full size within 2–3 years under ideal conditions, and begins fruiting in its second year.
