'McLean' Plum

How to grow 'McLean' Plum in NZ

'McLean' Plum grows best in full sun with fertile, well drained soil. Incorporate compost into the planting site before planting and water regularly during establishment. Apply a quality fruit tree fertiliser each spring and maintain a layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture while keeping it away from the trunk.

'McLean' Plum care tips

'McLean' Plum benefits from annual winter pruning to remove dead, damaged, or crowded branches and maintain an open canopy. Water during extended dry periods, especially while fruit is developing. Monitor for common pests and diseases and harvest fruit when it is fully coloured and ripe for the best eating quality.

'McLean' Plum size, spacing, and growth rate

'McLean' Plum typically reaches 3 to 5 metres in height with a similar spread, depending on the rootstock and how it is pruned. It has a moderate growth rate and commonly starts fruiting within a few years of planting. Space trees 4 to 5 metres apart to encourage healthy growth and good airflow.
