Olive Rakino Details

Olea Rakino is a variety of Olive tree grown for its high-quality fruit. The medium-sized, dark purple-black fruit have a distinct taste and can be squeezed to make a rich oil or eaten fresh. The fruit originate from white-cream flowers in summer. NB: For best fruiting we recommend another Olive variety be planted nearby to aid pollination. The foliage comprises grey-green leaves held on slender branches that have a gentle arch. This evergreen typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of extended dry periods, moderate frost, and cool climates, and some wind, though will benefit from protection while establishing. Olea Rakino is one of the more popular varieties of olive tree and is often grown for fruit production. It also makes for an impressive specimen and is useful for screening, using as a windbreak, or being trimming either into a hedge or for topiary. For an olive tree hedge, space the plants 75 cm to 1 m apart.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Olive Rakino? We are here to help.

I would like to replace large olive trees with a smaller variety - that grow to no more than about 6 m. For a driveway entrance so appearance is more important than fruit/oil production. What would you suggest? thanks Sandra

Kia ora, For your driveway entrance where size and appearance are key (and you want the trees to stay under ~6 m), these olive varieties from The Plant Company should work well as attractive specimen trees: Olive El Greco – naturally compact (around 2.5 m) with classic silvery‑green foliage and good form. Olive J5 – grows to about 3 m tall and wide and makes an impressive small tree. Olive Koroneiki – another medium‑sized option (3 m) with attractive evergreen foliage. All three stay well under your 6 m limit and offer that Mediterranean look you’re after. You can still prune them for shape and size as needed.
